Talking about beasties (take it as meaning either Diego or wee animals ahem ;) I have to agree with Judy Chicago in this bbc article.
There have been suggestions that Kahlo paints herself with animals when there's a separation issue with Rivera. But how do we know that? Why don't we look at what she is trying to say about the relationship between human beings and other species? This kind of thing rarely happens with male artists. Imagine an art historian saying Jackson Pollock threw paint at a canvas whenever he and his wife Lee Krasner had a fight."
Frida LOVED animals and surrounded herself with them. They were part of her joy, her solace, her life, hardly surprising she would include them in her paintings. Not EVERYTHING she did in her art had to do with Diego, sheesh!!

Before I read her comment, I'd have maybe 'projected' that Frida's animals were a stand-in for the children she so desperately wanted and couldn't have. But that's not fair: I love animals, too, and it's not a substitute for anything. They're just really cool and interesting.
Frida's life just sucked on so many levels..I always kinda grieve for her.
And I definitely think her art was her solace, as it can be for any of us.
