MultiMedia Artist?

Effigy wish doll by c.bayrak
I had a anon commentator on another blog (talking about knit graffiti) scoff at my mention that I was a multimedia artist when I stated I also used yarn as a medium to express myself (they said my claim of being a multimedia artist was a bit of a stretch). I had to wonder if they had either never visited my website or blog OR maybe just didn't know what a multimedia artist is.
So for those who may wonder a multimedia artist uses a combination of different materials, media, supports, to express themselves. I like the freedom to work between genres, disciplines, mediums, between fine art and craft, high art and low art and prefer not to work within traditional boundaries or accepted genres.

12 Pack Show
Reception went well and I want to thank those that came, to those who took the time to let me know what they think of my work, and my blog.
Thank You

On commissions

I had a difficult time trying to explain to someone last night why I don't do commissions and being nonplussed I might have come across as being flippant.
The truth is I find them difficult because I am no longer fulfilling my own need to express something, which is the core of how I work as an artist.
Simple as that really.

I appreciate your description of multi-media art. It's how I work, too... sometimes fascinated by craft and the physical requirements of certain materials, other times happily lost in pure painting. Today I plucked an owl, for feathers to make Cedar Spirits. It's all part of the art, somehow.

Hey Corinne,
Congratulations on the show. I'm glad it went well. I still hate that I missed it though it would have been a little bit of a trek to get there.
Yep. They must not have done their research. Just the 12 pack show alone speaks to multi-media art. Sounds like someone spoke before they knew what they were talking about.
Maybe the anonymity was covering up a little jealous artist elf somewhere out in blog land.

And then I just would like to ask said elf...What is wrong with yarn?

Painter girl, what is wrong with yarn? Well I think there is some universal law that says yarn can only be used to knit sweaters/socks or made into blankets for the homeless.

We had a nice crowd and it was fun.

Hiay Betsy, There is a special joy in each isn't there and it fits some internal need. I love the process of knitting or hand sewing, just as I love getting loast (as you say) in the pure act of painting. LOVE feathers, will have to come and see what you do with them.

Scoff? Someone scoffed at your artform. Tie 'em up with that yarn and make them into an exhibit of ignorance!

I think multi-media is one of the most interesting and innovative artforms.

You were talking to an idiot...multimedia doesn't even cover what you do...you need a new name for what you do! I am glad the show went well. I try and explain why I don't do commissions anymore and it always falls short too...I will do a commission if I am given a raw idea and then allowed to proceed with no rules and no complaints. Don't happen all that often though. :)
I made a new monster, come check him out. Love n stuff! BTW the word verification for this comment was (I am not kidding) hussies...LOL!
You are very definitely a mixed media artist and the troll needs to climb back under the bridge. I love how people come and leave little digs when they don't know what they are talking about in the first place.... and you know that I respect you tremendously as an artist and a creative soul... as do so many others.

So glad your show was great... keep doing what you are doing!!!!

Jaf,
I wrote a comment yesterday and then the comment thingy went weird. So I will write again.

You are right. The term multimedia artist was used as a kind of synonym to mixed media artist in the past. However, the term multimedia artist has now been usurped by the technology crowd. Since it is commonly used to describe a techie type artist in today's society, this may be the reason why some may balk if used another way.
The YARN thing. I am not sure what the person with thinking in this case. However, it might have to do with the hierarchy of mediums from the past. Through the centuries there have been categories of high art and low art, fine art vs. utilitarian art, and the appropriate media associated with either. Anything related to utilitarian art is considered "low class" or of lesser value. These are prejudices handed down from generations of art history. It is also related to sexism. (Yarn is related to women’s work). These kinds of attitudes are not right, but they exist even in this day and age.

What?? They couldn't have visited your blog before because I've never known anyone to use so many different and unique materials in their art work as you! It's a shame that they don't see yarn as another medium, but as you say, traditionally it's used for jumpers and people don't view jumpers as works of art (which again is a shame, because actually some people make their own knitting designs and they can be quite intricate). I thought fashion design was viewed as an art form? Where do we draw the line and say "that medium is art but that medium isn't?"

Anyway, I'm starting to waffle.

You know sheree I noticed that when I looked up the wiki entry for it. well hell, I am reclaiming it lol! I am a multimedia, mixed media, interstitial artist. frig that is too long a title LOL! Hell with it I am a jafa. Your assessment is spot on though.

It is a funny thing undaunted, but yes there are those that still cling to the antiquated notion of what yarn is supposed to be used for and by whom.

lol sally, now that would be fun, to tie to them to the tree with yarn, and have a knitted silence of the lambs mask on the face, hee hee evil grin.

thank you Judith, I just thought the comment was rather funny. It has been one of the milder one's I have come across in regards to the knit knot tree though.
