A Rose is a Rose

"Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose."
which translates to
"things are what they are".

One of my earliest lessons in drawing was not to draw what you *think* you see, but what it is and what you see. The painting study on the left was about seeing light/dark and shapes (I squinted my eyes when looking at the rose). The drawing on the right is obviously about only seeing edges.
All about Roses
"The rose is the national flower of England amd the United States"
A red rose (often held in a hand) is also a symbol of socialism or social democracy.

oh, I haven't shown you the finished painting yet :) these are just two quick studies in my sketchbook.

The painting study in my sketchbook looks like a completed painting on here. Looks quite good, didn't realize I had really captured the way the leaves are.

To this day, my most frequently muttered comment to myself when drawing remains "Draw what's THERE, not what you think is there."

"Draw what you see, not what you think you see." That's an interesting statement, and much easier said than done. I always seem to do the latter, despite my best intentions. Later when I step back from my work and look at what I've done, I find my errors, the relationship between the spaces is off. I like the way you approached drawing and painting this rose. It reminds me in a way of the quick sketch with eyes closed that you did. You did really capture the essence of roseness.

Takes some confidence to paint what you see and not what you think you see -- and to then leave it alone!

How is the prep for the exhibit coming along? Are some of these recent posts going to be part of it?

hi jan,
"Are some of these recent posts going to be part of it?"

I am thinking of including what is posted on the blog as part of the exhibit. sort of showing the creative process that has led to what is ultimately put in the exhibit and why. Not sure, the seeds of an idea are just germinating.

thanks for taking the time to drop by and comment everyone. I do appreciate the comments and they are helpful in many ways.

This is going to be gorgeous, I love how you captured the color and light in the rose! You know, a sad but true fact, the worse my eyes get the easier it is for me to paint LOL. All I have to do is take off my glasses but I can see perfectly up close! I don't even have to squint anymore.
